united by darkness

United by Darkness is a visual project inspired by the current fight for equal rights of women and the LGBT+ community in countries with conservative governments, like Poland.

It focuses on the feelings of people experiencing discrimination. Each photo represents a different topic/emotion, in a subtle, conceptual way, with the use of symbols. Among the topics, they tell the story of belonging, separation of families, experiencing hate speech and propaganda vs feeling free, mental health issues and a common stereotype of a woman, destined to be a mother.

Sometimes, while reading the news, we get overwhelmed by images.  I want the viewers to stop for a moment, question, try to understand and guide into the world of emotions, personal, not anonymous. By this project, I want to show my support to protestors in Poland and speak up against people whose actions deeply affect women and the LGBT+ community.

Photos were exhibited at 107 Redfern St Art Space (Diploma Graduate Exhibition).

Awards: Highly Commended Award by Capture Magazine, 21’ Australasia’s Top Emerging Photographers, Category: Open.
